The plant is called in English by the name of Spikenard. It is found in the Himalaya region of 3000 to 4500 meters height where the area are rocky and the climate is cold and wetly. Jatamansis are found whole year in these places. The tubers that are found beneath the ground are red — brown color and have hair like roots covered all the area of tuber. The tubers are 7 cm long and 3 cm width. The taste of tuber is bitter and hot. The leaves grow from the lower part of the plant and are 2 cm width and 20 cm length. The leaves are pointed with hairs. There is only one bunch of flower and all the flowers are bloomed there only. The color of the flower is pink white. Both male and female reproductive organs are present in the flower. The flowering and the fruiting of the plant takes place from Ashad to Bhadra and Aswin to Kartick respectively.
